- Photographs of Brigadier J.A. Bennett and members of the Elgin Regiment. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on January 18, 1950, page one: “Area Commander Welcomes New Men Joining Elgin Regiment. 2_3009: “new men coming to the Elgin regiment were among a group of veteran members of he unit who greeted Brigadier J.A.W. Bennett, C.B.E., commander of Western Ontario Area of Central Command, during his first official visits to the regiment on Tuesday evening. The men in the above group photograph, taken while the brigadier talked informally with them around a small sand table, are all members of either of the two new platoons being set up within the regiment the scout platoon commanded by Capt. R.L. Chantler, and the precision drill platoon, commanded by Major R.S. Chamberlain, M.C. Three in the group who were still in civies and have yet to be outfitted, were commanded by the brigadier on the spirit they have shown in coming out with the regiment. With Brigadier Bennett in the centre of this group are, left to right, Pte. G.H. Haycook, Pts. K.F. McKay, Pte. W. R. McDonald, Pte. A.R. Dennis (union), Capt. Chantler, Brigadier Bennett, Major Chamberlain, Pte. F. Murphy, and Pte. E. Hartsell.”
