- History / Biographical
- Morley Keith Thomas was born on August 18, 1918 in Westminster Township to Morley A. Thomas (1889-1918) and Alice Auckland Thomas (1888-1961). After the death of his father in 1918, his mother relocated to Talbotville with Morley, where he attended School Section No. 6 and, later, the St. Thomas Collegiate Institute. He also attended the University of Western Ontario in London, where he studied physics and mathematics. While at university, he met his wife, Clara McCandless, whom he married in 1942. They had two children, Stephen and John.
During the Second World War, Thomas served as a civilian Meteorological Officer with the RCAF as part of the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan. At the end of the war, he obtained a Master's Degree in Physics (meteorology) from the University of Toronto and pursued a career in climatology. When he retired in 1983, he was the director general of the Canadian Climate Centre in Environment Canada's Atmospheric Environment Service.
Morley Thomas died on March 31, 2018 in Watford, Ontario and 99 years old.
