- Photographs of Participants in the Elgin Regiment Battle of Spohn's Flats re-enactment. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on May 19, 1949, page one: “The Battle of Spohn’s Flats.” 2_1094: “From down below when the assault wave of Elgin infantry went in on the final sweep across the enemy strong-hold, this is what the scene looked like. Firing their rifles from the hip as they moved forward in a long lone, two of the infantrymen appear in the foreground and the enemy gun in the heart of the enemy strong-point is hidden behind the clouds of smoke from a round it had just let go. A small portion of the crowd of more than 5,000 who assembled to see the Battle of Spohn’s Flats may be seen at the top of the hill along Stanley Crescent. (See story page one, second edition.)” Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on May 19, 1949, page one: “Great Crowd Witnesses “Battle.”: “Spohn’s Flats Show Good Is Verdict of 5,000 Spectators.: Army Week Demonstration by the Elgin Regiment, Cadets and R.C.A.F. is Spectacular Affair, Thoroughly Enjoyed by Vast Throngs; Observes Present From Western Ontario Army Headquarters; Youngsters Get Thrill.” 2_1098: “When the Battle of Spohn’s Flats reached its predestined conclusion with another victory for the Elgins, the enemy gun captured in the assault was hauled away as part of the spoils of battle. Here a carrier commanded by Capt. F.L. Eaton, of the attacking force, hooks on the captured weapon to drag it away while small boy spectators who swarmed down the hillside after the show to hunt for spent rounds and shells cases watch the proceedings.” 2_1092: “Real smoke bomb were employed inlaying down smoke screens in the Battle of Spohn’s Flats and the man responsible for the 2-inch mortar that fires them was Capt. Law Chantler, adjutant of the Elgins. He appears in foregrounds with Lieut. Charles Eldert, signals officer, nearby with a No. 58 set receiving information concerning the effectiveness of Capt. Chantler’s fire.” 2_1093: “Many of the cadets from the Collegiate Institute and the Vocational School Corps who volunteered to take part with the Elgins in staging the Battle of Spohn’s Flats appear in the above group surrounding Lieut. Donald A. Pearce, M.C., who had change of them during the show.” 2_1096: “Bren-gunner John Kaplanis, of the Elgin’s assault force, leads the way across a shallow part of Kettle Creek forded by the infantry in reaching the start-line for their final sweep upon the enemy.”
