Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, December 9, 1948, page one: "Brave Visitors to N.Y.C. Shops."
1_4162: "Let 'er drop," said Stan Mortin and W.H.A. Sparling, secretary of the city's Industrial Commission, as they, with a display of bravado, stood for their picture beneath the giant passenger locomotive hanging from the 100-ton travelling crane in the N.Y.C. locomotive erecting shops. They were in the Chamber of Commerce party making a goodwill tour of the shops Wednesday, when the picture was taken. (Other pictures and story of the tour appear on front page of second section.)"
Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, December 9, 1948, page eleven: "Chamber of Commerce Tour of Busy and Well-Equipped New York Central R.R. Shops."
1_4160: "Skill In Machine Operations is being watched by a group of Chamber of Commerce visitors to the N.Y.C. shops Wednesday as Thomas Birchall, 154 Alma street, turns brasses for driving boxes, in the machine shop. Mr. Birchall is one of the veteran machine shop employees, starting in the local shops in 1909. He trained in the Old Country, where training is most thorough. Mr. Birchall lost two sons in the Second World War, both serving in the R.C.A.F. Another son, Thomas Jr., is also a skilled worker in the M.C.R.-N.Y.C. shops. Watching Mr. Birchall turning brasses, left to right, are G. P. Spackman; Rev. Bruce Millar, principal of Alma College; C. W. Moody; Sam Graham of the Graham Oil Company; and John W. Jolly, of the Timken Roller Bearing Company, who organized and directed the visit for the Chamber of Commerce.
1_4161: "The Big Steam Generator in the power-house which helped out materially during the critical period of the Hydro shortage last month, was a point of interest for the Chamber of Commerce visitors to the New York Central shops Wednesday. Shown in the above photograph, inspecting the generating plant, are left to right: E. Forbes Raven, director of the Chamber of Commerce; Dr. Glenn Sawyer; Ray Copeland, administrative superintendent of the Memorial Hospital; John W. Jolly, general manager of the Timken Roller Bearing Company and chairman of the goodwill visiting committee of the Chamber of Commerce; G. P. Spackman, director fo the Chamber; Richard A. Sanders, mayor of St. Thomas in 1946; C. W. Moody of Elgin Meat Supply, Limited; Dr. John F. Curtis, and Percy Hankinson, assistant divisional superintendent and trainmaster. M.C.R.-N.Y.C. The steam generator produced electrical energy at the rate of 2,750 kilowatt hours daily.
