- Photographs of members of the St. Thomas Lions Club handing over the keys to a 1948 Chevrolet Sedan to Gary Carr. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal: "Winner of Lions Car and the Runner-Up." 1_1846: "Congratulations are offered Gary (Gig) Carr, 17, of Shedden, as Dr. E. L. Brown, president of the St. Thomas Lions Club, hands him the keys of the 1948 model Chevrolet sedan that he won in a guessing contest conducted by the club. The ceremony was held Wednesday noon at the corner of Talbot and Southwick streets, after the car had run an extra hour to break a tie resulting from the original contest. In the project, 18,000 entered guesses as to the mileage of the vehicle over a 48-hour period. Tied with Carr in the first try was Fred Dinwoodie, of Seaforth, and formerly of St. Thomas (extreme right). In the second run Wednesday, for the benefit of the two men, the car speedometer registered a guess of 27.9 miles. Carr entered a guess of 26.2 miles, and Dinwoodie 24.2 miles. Seen here, (left to right), are Art Galloway, first vice-president of the Lions Club, and a member of the committee of arrangements; Dr. E. L. Brown, the club president; Graham Snelgrove, chairman of the project committee; Gary Carr, and Fred Dinwoodie."
