- History / Biographical
- James Anthony Bell was born in 1851, in the township of Lobo, County of Middlesex. In 1876, Bell moved to St. Thomas, where he permanently resided and co-established the surveying firm of Ware & Bell. On September 20, 1882, he married Kate Darrach of St. Thomas and later had five sons. They lived at 81 Elm Street in St. Thomas.
Bell worked as City Engineer of St. Thomas from 1882-1891, and from 1896-1911. He also worked as Engineer for the County of Elgin for over 40 years, and operated a private practice under the name of Jas. A. Bell & Son. Bell died in 1929 at the age of 78.
