- History / Biographical
- Allview Cable Services in St. Thomas, founded in 1963, produced a series of local history broadcasts from the mid-1970's to the mid-1990's. Guests were invited to share their expertise on local topics. The original host was George Thorman. In the early 1990's, Steve Peters took over as host.
George Thorman was a local historian and vice-principal at St. Thomas Collegiate Institute at St. Thomas, Ontario. He also played an important role in the Elgin Historical Society. He died in 1997.
Steve Peters was the Mayor of St. Thomas from 1991 to 1999. In 1999, he became the Member of Provincial Parliament for the riding of Elgin-Middlesex-London, and began serving as Minister of Agriculture and Food in 2003. He is very knowledgable about Elgin County history, and is active in the Elgin Historical Society.
Allview Cable Services of St. Thomas was acquired by Shaw Cable in the mid-1990's. Currently, the station is owned by Rogers Cable Systems.
- Custodial History
- In 2001, the videocassettes were acquired from Rogers Television in St. Thomas by Mr. Bill Gliddon, who subsequently transferred them to the Elgin-St. Thomas Archives Association. The association then transferred them to the Elgin County Archives. A formal donation was made in 2004 by Rogers Television.
- Scope and Content
- The fonds consists of recordings of the "Local History with George Thorman" series, which ran on the local Allview Cable 8 network. In each episode, George Thorman interviews guests about various aspects of the history of St. Thomas and Elgin Country. In the early to mid-1990's, Steve Peters took on the role of host. The show then became known as "The New Local History with Steve Peters".
These shows examined a wide range of topics, such as: the military careers of local citizens, the history of St. Thomas businesses, and the natural history of Elgin County.
The diverse and detailed expertise of the guests makes this fonds an important source of historical information.
