- Scope and Content
- Great Western Railway Iron Trestle Bridge, St. Thomas, ca. 1890, looking north, with trains passing across travelling west. Constructed across what would become Athletic Park. This was the second bridge constructed at this location. This iron trestle bridge replaced the original bridge constructed in 1872 using wood and steel girders. The property that became Athletic Park was donated to the City of St. Thomas by W.K. Cameron (Ian D. Cameron's father). Note the pump house beneath the eastern end of the bridge. St. George Street is visible in the foreground. Note the man-made pond, possibly created by flooding to provide power to Keith's Flax Mill. Note the wire fence in the foreground - ca. 1890 the Government of Ontario offered property owners financial aid to erect wire fences.
