- "Golden opportunity for St. Thomas children - A truly wonderful musical organization, the London Symphony Orchestra, directed by Martin Boundy, is coming to St. Thomas next Friday to give a special concert for the public school children of this city at the new gymnasium-auditorium at the Central Elgin District High School. The London Symphony each year gives a series of children's concerts for those attending London schools, but this year, through a special grant from the Canada Council, it has been possible to arrange to give several concerts free of charge in neighboring centres. St. Thomas has been fortunate in being offered the performance to be given next Friday evening. This week, the pupils of the St. Thomas Public Schools were told about the concert and took home printed notices for the attention of their parents, many of whom will undoubtedly accompany their children. There should be a standing-room only audience in the huge auditorium, but it can accommodate 1,200, it is said. The concert will start at 7 p.m. and last about an hour, but the program will be such as to be of real help to young people - and their elders - in understanding and appreciating good music. Mr. Boundy, with the help of Earle Terry, director of music for the London Board of Education, will give the audience a brief lesson in the organization and make-up of a symphony orchestra and give the background of each work to be performed. To demonstrate how the effort of each musician is woven into a finished presentation, individual members of the orchestra will play the notes of a few mars in the arrangement, first solo, then together, and finally the whole orchestra will be brought into play. Solo performers will include violinist Ron Trachy, the orchestra's concert master; violinist Horst Seifert; cellist Wacla Skoula; bass violinist Robert Chapman; poccolo, Jack Chapman; flute, Gerald Meyer; clarinet, Philip Murphy; oboe, Peter Oukflucht; and bassoon, Peter Sonerville. Arthur H. Birks, president of the London Symphony Orchestra Association, has been here this week to assist E.O. Reeb, superintendent of public schools, in preparation for the concert, and Mr. Birks gives enthusiastic assurance that the young people of the city are in for something they are sure to enjoy." - "The woman's point of view - Mrs. Margaret Henry, of London, the only female member of the Symphonic Brass Quintet of the London Symphony Orchestra, explains the operation of the French Horn to some Elgin students following one of four concerts performed at county schools by the quintet, Friday. Looking on from left are Sandy Cummings, Wellington Street School; Heather Callowhill, Homedale School; and Chris Cassidy, St. Raphael's Separate School. The students were among an estimated 1,000 senior elementary youngsters to hear the concerts." (44b)
