- History / Biographical
- Members of 4-H participated in individual clubs, which were centred around a particular theme. The members would each attempt to finish an assigned project (such as raising a dairy calf, or sewing a dress), and would be graded for their efforts. Clubs were lead by two leaders, adult participants that taught younger members the skills needed to complete a project; on occasion, older members would also serve as assistant leaders. At the end, those who successfully completed a club would present their result at an achievement day. Members could be in multiple clubs simultaneously, and after 1985, would receive recognition after 6, 12, 18, and 24 projects completed. In their final year of 4-H, which was age 21, they would receive a graduation certificate.
In 4-H Agriculture, members focused on a variety of topics, but some of the more common ones included raising livestock (beef, dairy, dairy goats, and horses are examples), and growing crops.
In 4-H Homemaking, the clubs would give themselves names, and a requirement of each project was that each member would produce and update a workbook, which contained minutes of meetings, lists of members (who would also make up the club executives), lessons, homework, clippings, and other things relating to their project. These workbooks were required to be aesthetically pleasing and creative.
