- Scope and Content
- Digitized copy of an original survey plan of the Township of Southwold, County of Elgin, registered December, 1810, Port Talbot, Mahlon Burwell, Deputy Surveyor. Shows the division of the township into concessions and lots with annotations dated 1817-1818 indicating the names of grantees resident on some of these lots. Scale 1 inch equals 40 chains. Named geographic and cultural features shown in this plan include Lake Erie, North Road, Middle Road, Lake Road, Cross Road, Kettle Creek, "Source of the West Branch of Kettle Creek" (with creek shown flowing from an area marked "Tamarack Swamp"), "Boundary between Dunwich and Southwold", footpaths marked "Indian Path to Kettle Creek" and "Old Path from the Mohawk Village", and a first nations village site marked "Delaware Village." Several lots are marked in gray (indicating Clergy reserves) and red ink (Crown reserves) or, to the same purpose, "Clergy" and "Crown". A large tract in the northwest corner of the plan is marked as reserved for or granted to "Col. J.G. Simcoe". The plan also shows part of Delaware Township in Middlesex County (Concessions I-IV, Lots 8-24): the survey grid is shown, but no grantee names.
