- Erected in honour of Lieut.-Col. Mahlon Burwell, founder of Port Burwell, the historic plaque pictured above was unveiled at Port Burwell on August 7, 1960. Those taking part in the ceremony are seen in this picture. Left to right are A.C. Evely, public works chairman; Ron K. McNeil, M.P.P. for Elgin; Harvey Liddle, Warden of Elgin; Rev. P.G. Docksie, rector of Trinity Anglican Church, Port Burwell; Mrs. B. Poustie, oldest living native, who unveiled the plaque; Leslie R. Gray, London, representing the Archaeological and Historical Sites Board of Ontario; Mrs. M.G. Young, St. Thomas, representing Elgin County's Museum Board, and Kenneth Baird, Reeve of Port Burwell.
