- The Township of Dunwich was incorporated on January 1, 1850, and contained the settlements of Dutton, Wallacetown, Iona, Tyrconnell and Cowal. Dutton was later incorporated separately as a village.
- The Township amalgamated with the Village of Dutton on January 1, 1998 to form the Municipality of Dutton/Dunwich.
