- Scope and Content
- Photograph shows Eakin's Store at the corner of Quaker Road and Sparta Line. The brick building was built in 1846 by John Eakins, replacing a frame structure which had been erected in 1818. In 1851, the post office was housed in the store. John Eakin served as postmaster from 1851 until December 1900. His son Edwy took over from him and served until his death in 1922. After the death of Edwy Eakin, Eric Oille purchased the store and served as postmaster. From 1924 to 1942, the public library was also in this building. Included in Sparta Sorosis Women's Institute Tweedsmuir History Book, Volume One. Sign is visible: "Public Library Upstairs".
