History / Biographical
Photograph is part of the Payne family photo album, which contains 12 photographs taken by Ernest Payne in 1899-1900. Ernest was the youngest son of Manuel Payne, an early settler in Port Stanley. The Payne House was erected by Manuel Payne on Main Street, Port Stanley, in 1873. It was built on the site where the first house in the village was built by Colonel John Bostwick. Payne tore down the Bostwick frame house and built a gothic style brick residence. The Payne house was restored in the 1970s and later housed stores and boutiques.

Douglas Payne with his sisters Bessie (standing) and Maud (in hammock), as well as two unidentified individuals, pictured on the Payne house veranda. In the album, the photograph is captioned with "The Bunch".
