The origin of this photograph is not known. It is a photograph taken of a photograph. Written on the back of the photograph: "Float in Peace Parade". The original photograph of which this is a copy was taken during "Peace Day" celebrations in St. Thomas on July 19, 1919, welcoming home the 91st Battalion and other veterans of the First World War. A different photograph of this float, by Scott Studio, was published in the St. Thomas Times-Journal, July 21, 1919, p. 1, with caption: "The spirit of peace surmounting the globe was splendidly portrayed in the float arranged by St. Thomas Chapter I.O.D.E., which was given the place of honour in the peace pageant. Warren Andrews of the Anderson Company Limited designed this delightful creation and supervised the decorating. The horses were loaned by W.T. Futcher of Talbotville, who also donated his services as driver. The wagon was donated by Thomas McKeown of this city while barrister W.K. Cameron very kindly permitted the ladies to use his rink for rehearsal purposes. Mrs. Bowers was convenor of the float. The little girls who figured in the unit were Jean Andrews, daughter of mr. and Mrs. Warren Andrews, spirit; Grace McIlroy, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Edwin McIlroy; Grace Wright, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. E.N. Wright; Jean Evans, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Evans; Charlotte, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. Chamberlain."

History / Biographical
The Soldiers' Aid Commission was established by the Province of Ontario through Order-in-Council in 1915 to provide emergency financial assistance to Ontario veterans and/or dependents of the First World War. The Soldiers' Aid Commission Act of 1916 subsequently established a series of local boards under the administration of the Department of the Attorney General to review applications and disburse funds. The County of Elgin administered one of these local boards.
Scope and Content
Fonds consists of alphabetical registers listing the name, rank, address, place of enlistment, battalion, areas of service, wounds and date of return to Canada. These registers were compiled for the purposes of determining eligibility for assistance for returning soldiers from the First World War. Details of amounts received or particulars of individual applications are not included in these registers. Residents of both the County of Elgin and the City of St. Thomas are listed. An alphabetical index exists at the front of each register.
