Scope and Content
Photographs of views of Port Stanley and the Port Stanley beach. Captions from St. Thomas Times-Journal, June 29, 1948, page eleven: "Port Stanley Near Century Mark As Resort." "Coming Week End Will See Hundreds Settled for Season: Overnight Transition Will See Village of 950 Grow to Town of 5,000; Has Been Mecca for Holiday Crowds Since Advent of L. & P.S.; First Cottages Built About 1873." 1_2588: "Main Breakwater Pier Forms Popular Promenade, Fishermen's Perch: The long, low lighthouse breakwater pier at Port Stanley is an ever popular promenade on week-days and week-ends all summer long, even though it has, from time to time been barred to the public. This is the pier that Port Stanley fishermen hoped would be extended this summer farther into the lake to provide better protection against heavy seas being swept into the inner reaches of the harbor. But the Federal Government has apparently decided against doing anything about the job this year. Meanwhile, the pier serves its original purposes with the beacon at its outward extremity to guide mariners and a claxon to warn them in heavy weather. When perch are running, as they were when this picture was taken last Sunday, it swarms with young and old, male and female anglers. The inner lengths of the pier also enclose the shallow basin in the foreground which provides a safe anchorage for pleasure boats of all kinds." Captions from St. Thomas Times-Journal, June 29, 1948, page twelve: "Port Stanley Ready For Big Summer Season." 1_2585 and 1_2587: "Photos Reveal Port Stanley On Shore of Big, Broad Bay: At left and right are two excellent new photographs which are very revealing in that they both emphasize the fact Port Stanley is on the shore of one of the broad bays of the north shore of Lake Erie. At left (1_2585) is the view to the east from the tip of the Hillcrest spur which rises above the east side of the harbor." Along the shoreline below may be seen several of the groynes run out from shore along Orchard Beach in recent years in an effort to halt erosion of the bank. Orchard Beach contains many of the finest summer homes at Port Stanley, including Alma Cilla, owned by Harry Hunter of the Grand Central Hotel, St. Thomas, built for year-round use by James Duffield, of London, Ont., about 36 years ago. The picture to the right (1_2587) was taken from a point at the extreme east end of the main beach and shows the view to the west, taking in several points which jut out into the lake almost as far away as Port Talbot. It gives a good idea of the expanse of beach for nearly a mile and three-quarters west of the harbor, all built up during the past 75 years. As yet, only the extreme east end of the beach is packed hard enough to bear automobiles. Elsewhere the lake has laid down a great depth of soft white sand, a delight to sun-worshippers, and the water remains shallow for a considerable distance out from shore, which is ideal for youngsters." Captions from St. Thomas Times-Journal, June 29, 1948, page thirteen: "Port Stanley Ready For Big Summer Season." 1_2584: "Broad, White Sand Beach Invites Bathers and Baskers: Every fine day all summer long, this view could be duplicated on the main beach at Port Stanley. The broad expanse of fine white sand attracts hundreds seeking relief from the oppressive heat of the city, to enjoy the cool and refreshing waters of the lake, or simply to bask and cultivate dusky complexions and sun-bleached tresses." Captions from St. Thomas Times-Journal, June 29, 1948, page fourteen: "Port Stanley Ready For Big Summer Season." 1_2591: "Some Come to Fish, Others to Kibitz: When fish are running inshore, the news spreads fast and far from Port Stanley, bringing many anglers here to try their luck from vantage points along the breakwaters. When the above picture was taken, the Izaak Waltons of Port Stanley, St. Thomas, London, and many of the smaller places around about about, where jammed along the edges of the west breakwater pier so close that space was at a premium. It happened also to be a bright sunny day and many who came without fishing gear got their pleasure from the sport of kibitzing and strolling up and down the length of the walk out to the lighthouse pyramid, watching what was going on."

Photographs of people sun bathing and swiming at Port Stanely beach and pier. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal on June 29, 1949, page one: ‘Bathing at ‘Port” Off to an Early Start.” 2_1498: “The weather, so favorably hot this year, has brought hundreds of bathers to Port Stanley’s favorite spot, the main beach, to spend the day enjoying the water and bright sunshine. This photograph, taken but two weeks ago, shoes the long beach that attracts so many people year after year. Safe bathing conditions have made a splendid record for “Port,” and this year, the lifeguard will have an addition to his equipment, a motorboat, and to keep things orderly, will be given the authority of a special constable. With shade trees all along the shore close to the lake, the break at Port Stanley provides a place of enjoyment for both sun-bathers and those who prefer to sit under a tree.”

History / Biographical
Julia Payne Smith, from Paynes Mills, was an artist who taught at Alma, ca. 1900 to 1912. She and her husband William 'St. Thomas' Smith had met while at art college in Toronto together. They married in 1886 and moved to St. Thomas. In keeping with the importance of the Arts and Crafts movement in Canada in the years around 1900, in ca. 1900, the Alma College Art Department offered instruction in clay modeling, woodcarving and sculpture, taught by Julia Smith; her husband William taught classes in painting and sketching and served as the Director of the Art Department. (biographical information taken from Susan Butlin's 2011 book: "All The Girls Have Gone: Alma College: The Latter Years").

Five black-and-white negative photographs featuring the Port Glasgow Beach, on June 23, 1983.
W9 B2 9 was published in the Rodney Mercury on June 23, 1983, with the caption: "Port Glasgow's wide beach in front of the Yacht Club proved a popular place the past two hot weekends, the first of the bathers being there weekend before last, when the water temperature was about 55 F degrees. However, a few youngsters braved the cold water, adults preferring to sun bathe on the beach. Several other bathers and sun worshippers took advantage of the beach at Beattie Access beyond the trees in the background."
