File contains a 1908 memorandum from the Canadian Customs Department regarding foreign-built locomotives, as well as correspondence between F.G. Scace, a special agent with the Canadian Customs Department, and S.W. Brown, General Superintendent of the Michigan Central Railroad in St. Thomas, Ontario, regarding the Michigan Central Railroad acquiring new equipment. Scace requests clarification if the railway company will be building new equipment in Canada, or in the United States, to determine if a duty payment is required. File also contains internal correspondence between Michigan Central Railroad employees regarding the matter, in an attempt to determine if equipment is needed and where it will be built to allow an informed response to the Canadian Customs Department.

History / Biographical
The subject property discussed in the correspondence was located at 606-610 Talbot Street in St. Thomas, Ontario. The building was constructed in 1913 for the Noble Manufacturing Co. Ltd., biscuit makers. It was taken over in 1916 by Nobility Chocolates Ltd., and was was vacant from 1923 to 1926. In 1927, the Ross Leaf Tobacco Co. Ltd. moved its business into the building for a short time, as it was taken over in late 1927 by the Sutherland Press Ltd., Frederick W. Sutherland, president. Loder Sutherland was the last business that occupied this building, according to the St. Thomas city directories. It is listed in the 1992/93 Directory, but then listed as vacant in the 1994/95 Directory. In 2017, the building was demolished.

Also contains correspondence between H. Shearer and F.W. Cowley, Trainmaster, regarding a complaint from W.J. Shaw, Sanitary Inspector from the Board of Health Office in St. Thomas. Also contains correspondence regarding unauthorized indiviuals stealing garbage that had been removed from dining cars, rather than being collected via proper channels, and a police report being filed in response to this issue.
