Scope and Content
Photographs of repairs being done on the Pere Marquette Bridge in St. Thomas, taken on August 14, 1946. Images include repairmen working on the bridge as well as landscape views from the bridge. Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, August 17, 1946: "Reinforcing Pere Marquette Bridge Here: Strengthen Structure For Heavier Loads: P. M. Bridge Abutments Being Reinforced and Rebuilt." 46-1423 (1_1175): "Five-ton steam hammer, operating from this travelling crane, drives the piles for the reinforced bridge." 46-1422 (1_1174): "Ninety-six of these forty-foot tubular steel piles are being driven into the hardpan to strengthen the abutments." Caption from St. Thomas Times-Journal, August 20, 1946: "A New View of Picturesque St. Thomas Valley" 46-1424 (1_1176_: "The natural beauty of the ravines that bisect and almost circle St. Thomas invariably impress visitors to the city. Entering St. Thomas from the west, majestic vistas open before them as they come over the top of Sandymount Hill. An arresting view of the Kettle Creek calley with which St. Thomas people are not so familar was caught by The Times-Journal photographer last week from the top of the 110-foot Pere Marquette Railroad bridge which spans the valley. The picture shows the valley land to the west of the bridge, with willows and heavy verdure decorating the banks of the twisting creek. In the background, to the right, may be seen the top of the Michigan Central Railroad's big concrete bridge while to the left are the embankments that rise above the Fingal Road bridge and hill roadway."

The South Western Traction Company, later renamed the London and Lake Erie Railway and Transportation Company, operated an electric rail line between St. Thomas and Port Stanley from 1907 to 1918.
Scope and Content
This photograph shows the electrified "Traction Line", ca. 1906, operated by the South Western Traction Company and its successor the London and Lake Erie Railway and Transportation Company. Construction began on the line in 1903, and the tracks reached St. Thomas in 1906. Note the double wires above the tracks. After 1907, they switched to a single wire system. The view is looking west. This location is just below where the Jumbo monument is today. The bridge in the background swings to the north and is just about where the Talbot Hill road bridge over Kettle Creek is today except perpendicular to it. The South Western Traction Company, later renamed the London and Lake Erie Railway and Transportation Company, operated an electric rail line between St. Thomas and Port Stanley from 1906 to 1918.
