Scope and Content
Black and white photograph used in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published August 22, 1953 with caption: " The harvest of the early apple crop along the old Union Road is in progress. Above is shown Irving Fishleigh, who looks after George Oldreive's vigorous young orchard, sizing up some baskets of Red Melbas, that had just been picked, ready for transportation to the plant of Elgin Fruit Growers' Co-operative in St. Thomas. Mr. Oldreive has about 40 acres of orchard, planted nine years ago. In it are some 135 trees of Red Melba variety. They have been producing in commercial quantities for the last four to five years. This summer, those sturdy little trees will average three bushels apiece. The Red Melba is one of the finest of the new varieties of early apples, resulting from the crossing of the old Dutchess of Oldenberg, a veteran harvest apple, and the McIntosh Red. The first cross produced the Melba strain; then further selection brought the improved variety, Red Melbas. The Oldreive orchard is one of several along the Union Road. There are two large orchards on the R.F. Ferguson farm; two on the farm of Hon. F.S. Thomas, Ontario minister of agriculture; and apple and pear orchards on the farm of Theo. Turville and M.W. Meek."

" Mrs. Sheila McCausland, past president of the Boissevain (Man.) They visited the sugar bush owned by John S. Pearce, of Tyrconnell, located just south of Wallacetown. In the above picture, Mrs. McCausland and Mrs. West listen to Doug Simpson, an employee of Mr. Pearce, explaining the modern plastic line tapping system". (1b)
