"Surprise Bouquet - Mrs. A.E. Feindel, of 416 Beatrice Avenue, London, was pleasantly surprised yesterday afternoon when she was presented with a bouquet of roses as she prepared to board a Canadian National Railways train at London. The train was the new rail liner, termed a 'railway automobile', and it was making its initial trip from London to Toronto. Mrs. Feindel was its first woman passenger. Presenting the flowers is Douglas V. Gonder, of Toronto, vice-president of the CNR." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 6a)
"At The Ready - During a ceremony inaugurating a new rail liner service from London to Toronto Wednesday, these two young women employees of the Canadian National Railways held a company flag just prior to the train's break-through. From left to right: J.R. Church, CNR trainmaster and road foreman; Miss Irene Burns; and Miss Bonnie Bacigalupa, all of London." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 6b)

Here a few of them are seen streaming aboard the train at London. After tomorrow, the excursion would not have been possible unless they had been content to come only as far as St. Thomas, as the service between St. Thomas and Port Stanley terminates on Friday. "Restoration - Work is done on the exterior of [London and Port Stanley Railway] trailer car number 3 at the Halton County Radial Railway Museum. It takes countless hours of volunteer labour to put the old railway cars back in first-class condition." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 10a)
"Like New - The interior of [London and Port Stanley Railway] motor car number 8 has been restored to excellent condition. The motor car, which the L. & P.S. operated until the end of passenger service in 1957, is the only L. & P.S. car still running." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 10b)
"Much Work To Do - The interior of this L. & P.S. car shows the ravages of time and years of no use. A major task faced the members of the Halton County Radial Railway Museum in fixing this car up." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 10c)

21 photographs : b&w negatives
Scope and Content
Six black and white photographs used (and one photograph not used) in St. Thomas Times-Journal article published February 2, 1957 with captions:
"Mrs. Mary Ward of Windsor, who travelled on the L. & P.S. for over 30 years, gives her ticket to Conductor Harold Colbert as she makes her last trip to London." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3a)
"An express route to Port Stanley was another feature of the London and Port Stanley Railway. Here Bernard Taylor, chief clerk of the Port Stanley depot, receives parcels from Motorman William Boucher as the train reaches the southern end of its run." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3b)
"A familiar sight to many local residents is this approach from the south to the St. Thomas station. Visible is Paul's Food Bar. Here, during the summer months, could be heard the sounds of happy children's voices as they travelled through to spend the day by the cool waters of Lake Erie." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3c)
"Pulling around on a spur line, L. & P.S. trains called at the N.Y.C. [New York Central Railway] station in St. Thomas, picking up passengers, express and freight. This provided a direct route for boat passengers leaving New York City." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3d)
"This bridge, just north of Port Stanley, spans the beautiful Kettle Creek as it winds through the rich Elgin County farmlands to the Port Stanley harbour and Lake Erie." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3e)
"The Port Stanley station, near the King George VI Lift Bridge, is the original station, built over 100 years ago. During that time it has been remodelled and had its face lifted but has never been torn down and rebuilt. Although the end of the line during the winter, trains carried on through to the beach station in the summer months." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3f)
Image C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3g, not used in the article, shows an alternative view of chief clerk Bernard Taylor receiving parcels at the Port Stanley depot.
"Motorman William Boucher of London handles the controls of an electric locomotive as the electrical era of the line draws to a close. A former St. Thomas man, Mr. Boucher has served on the L. & P.S. for 14 years." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3h)
"A passenger waits beside the Palm Street station to board the approaching London train. Alma College and the St. Thomas water tower can be seen in the background." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3i)
"At the London Depot, Miss Barbara Smith, of the Nurses' Residence at St. Thomas alights from the train assisted by Conductor Harold Colbert of London, who has been with the L & PS for eight years." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3j)
"The operation of freight trains over the L & PS route will continue but the trains will be pulled by modern diesel powered locomotives as shown above instead of the antiquated electric units." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3k)
"Many people blame the popularity of cars for the death of the L & PS Railway. Here, on the outskirts of Port Stanley, No. 4 Highway bends and appears and appears to nudge the train tracks out of the way." (C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3l)
C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3m shows the St. Thomas station of the London & Port Stanley Railway, looking south towards Talbot Street.
C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3n shows the London & Port Stanley Railway crossing on Sunset Drive, St. Thomas, at the modern day intersection with Glenwood Avenue, looking north. The present site of Parkside Collegiate Institute is seen here as a vacant field to the east of the tracks.
C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3o shows the London & Port Stanley Railway tracks, looking south from a vantage point just north of the St. Thomas Psychiatric Hospital nurses' residence (now the Elgin County Administration Building), which is visible in the background.
C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3p shows London & Port Stanley Railway conductor Harold Colbert assisting a passenger off the train.
C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3q shows the London & Port Stanley Railway tracks, looking north from a vantage point just north of the Palm Street station, with Alma College and the St. Thomas water tower visible in the background.
C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3r, C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3s and C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3t show alternate views of London & Port Stanley Railway car number 12 in front of the Port Stanley station.
C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3u shows the London & Port Stanley Railway crossing on Bridge Street, Port Stanley, looking south. The King George VI Lift Bridge is just out of the picture to the left. The cottage/ residence of furrier Col. McCrimmon is visible in the background at left, atop the bluff.
C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3v shows London & Port Stanley Railway conductor Harold Colbert checking the ticket of passenger Mrs. Mary Ward (alternate view of C8 Sh3 B1 F2 3a).
The London and Port Stanley Railway Company was established by charter on May 23, 1853 and a 24-mile railway line opened for business on September 25, 1856. In September 1872, the L & Ps was leased to the Great Western Railway (later absorbed into the Grand Trunk Railway) for a period of 20 years. At the expiration of the lease in 1892, the City of London gained control of the L & PS and in 1893 purchased the minority share of stock owned by the City of St. Thomas. From 1893 to 1914 the L & PS was leased to the Lake Erie and Detroit River Railway (later the Pere Marquette Railway). At the expiration of the lease on January 1, 1914, the City of London again assumed control of and operated the L & PS, establishing the London Railway Commission for this purpose. Electric service on the L & PS began on July 1, 1915. Passenger service on the L & PS ceased on February 18, 1957. On January 1, 1966, control of the L & PS was transferred to the Canadian National Railways. (W. Glen Curnoe, "The London & Port Stanley Railway 1915-1965", pp. 1-3.)
